Mayor accuses lawmaker of stealing campaign cash; lawmaker accuses mayor of corruption

SALT LAKE CITY -- Accusations of corruption and theft have been leveled between the Salt Lake County Mayor and a state lawmaker.

Mayor Ben McAdams has accused Rep. Justin Miller, D-Salt Lake City, of stealing more than $30,000 from his campaign; Miller has accused McAdams of retaliating against him for blowing the whistle on questionable government contracts with a lobbying firm.

The allegations between the two Democrats spilled out Wednesday morning in a news conference called by McAdams, who declared that Miller "has lost my trust and confidence." The mayor accused Miller, his former re-election campaign manager and associate deputy mayor, of taking thousands from his campaign accounts.

"Personally? I felt betrayed. While turning the information over to law enforcement was a sad moment for me, it was not a hard decision," McAdams told reporters. "For me and my administration, trust is paramount."

Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams speaks at a news conference Wednesday, accusing Rep. Justin Miller of stealing money from his campaign accounts.

Miller, who has been elected to serve the Millcreek area in the Utah House of Representatives, claims McAdams retaliated against him and fired him in October 2014 for whistleblowing.

"I feel that what I did was the right thing," Miller said in an interview Wednesday with FOX 13.

In a notice of claim filed with Salt Lake County, Miller said he became aware of "certain dealings between the Mayor and The Exoro Group, which Mr. Miller believed to be in violation of state and county ordinances and policies to include those that govern conflicts of interest and purchasing, as well as a violation of various state laws."

Miller claims he raised questions about McAdams' re-election campaign leasing office space from Exoro Group, knowing that they had been awarded contracts with the county. In his notice of claim, Miller claimed Deputy Mayor Nichole Dunn signed one of those contracts.

"Mr. Miller also knew that a member of Exoro's team, Donald Dunn, whom Mr. Miller believed to also have an equitable ownership interest Exoro, is related to Deputy Mayor Dunn; specifically, Mr. Dunn is Deputy Mayor Dunn's spouse," the notice states.

Miller claims there were no conflict-of-interest disclosures involving the Dunns, The Exoro Group and Salt Lake County. He has accused the county of wrongful termination and racketeering, leveling corruption allegations at Mayor McAdams and Deputy Mayor Dunn.

Read Rep. Miller's notice of claim here:

Maura Carabello, an owner of The Exoro Group, acknowledged Dunn had done some work in the past on some projects related to the firm, but said he has never been an employee. She defended her firm's work with the county.

"The services we provide are on a competitive, open RFP process. It's very transparent," Carabello said. "Unfortunately, Rep. Miller lacks credibility in making these claims."

At McAdams' news conference on Wednesday, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said Miller's wrongful termination claims were investigated and found to be "without merit." He declined to comment further citing pending litigation.

"I stand by my filing that I made with Salt Lake County," Miller told FOX 13. "I'm disappointed with the lack of response to the corruption and racketeering charges."

McAdams said Miller made admissions to misappropriating campaign funds in a conversation recorded by the mayor. In response to a public records request, Salt Lake County released that recording to FOX 13 on Wednesday. On the recording, Miller is called into the mayor's office and confronted by Donald Dunn, whom Miller said worked on the re-election campaign as a fundraiser.

"Justin, sloppiness is one thing. Stealing is another," Dunn is heard saying.

"Go on...," Miller states on the recording.

Miller is questioned about $24,000 in funds used to purchase catering for an event as well as tens of thousands of other money that is unaccounted for. Dunn asks if he stole it. Miller replies: "I not going into it with you, Donald."

McAdams calls Miller's actions "dishonest" and demands repayment. Miller states on the recording he will produce documentation and ultimately expects an apology from the mayor.

"I am never going to apologize for wondering why in the hell you wrote yourself a $24,000 check and never fessed up to it!" McAdams snaps. "You think I owe you more? Bulls---!"

"OK," Miller said.

Listen to the recording here:

On Wednesday, McAdams walked away from the podium and refused to answer questions from FOX 13 about the county contracts or whether he was retaliating against Miller.

Rep. Miller would not answer if he stole any money from McAdams.

"I would like to answer that question," he told FOX 13. "I really would. But once somebody starts making accusations against you, you retain legal counsel. That's what I've done."

The Salt Lake City Police Department confirmed to FOX 13 it has an open investigation into the theft allegations. Once completed it would be turned over to Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings to screen for any potential charges.

County political parties react

In a statement, Salt Lake County GOP Chairwoman Suzanne Mulet weighed in on the political scandal involving the two Democrats:

"It is too premature to weigh in on who is right or wrong in this situation. While I recognize this is a conflicting situation between two high profile parties, it is concerning and believe the residents of Salt Lake County deserve transparency- because transparency matters.

Because of the individuals involved and allegations being made, it does leave questions that should be answered. I look forward to the legal resolution of this matter as quickly as possible."

Salt Lake County Democrats Chairwoman Clare Collard emailed FOX 13 to say:

"This is an internal employment issue, and I trust the investigation process."

PARK CITY, Utah – Police are asking the public for help locating those responsible for a series of vehicle burglaries and acts of vandalism that occurred all across Park City in the early morning hours of Sunday.

According to information from Sgt. Jay Randall of the Park City Police Department, several vehicles were burglarized, vandalized or both.

In some cases windows were broken but the contents of the car left untouched, while in other cases items were stolen from inside the vehicles. One vehicle was vandalized by someone using black spray paint.

“Thus far we think it’s at least two individuals, made their way through town and created all kinds of havoc,” Randall said. “Essentially they went around breaking glass windows out of the different cars, other cars they would go through, open the doors, go through and take items that didn’t belong to them. Other damages were also caused.”

Randall said it was strange in that some cars were burglarized, while in other cases very valuable items were left behind in cars that had their windows smashed. He said they are trying to work out who would commit such acts and for what reason.

“Thus far, we’re at a little bit of a loss as to why,” he said.

Police stated they estimate the total damages to be in the thousands of dollars, and they said they have developed several leads but are asking anyone who spotted anything out of the ordinary Sunday to contact Park City dispatch at 435-615-5500.

Randall said there are 15 and maybe even 16 incidents related to the spree, and he said they occurred all over the Park City area–except in the area near Deer Valley.

Randall said they are working with several leads and believe the crimes occurred sometime between 1 a.m. and 4 .m. He said one witness reported a dark-colored SUV with multiple people inside that may have been involved.

The posting from Sgt. Randall states: “The actions of these criminals is reprehensible with the thousands of dollars worth of damage, and those responsible will not go unpunished. Park City is a safe community, but individuals who are willing to go to such lengths out of spite need to face the consequences for their actions. Please join me in locating these individuals if you have any pertinent information. Thanks for your assistance.”

The video above is surveillance footage from an alleged aluminum theft that occurred Friday in West Bountiful. There is no audio with the footage.

WEST BOUNTIFUL, Utah -- For the fourth time in five months, Ralph Smith Company in West Bountiful says they’ve been hit by aluminum thieves.

They say three men dismantled a fence and drove onto their property in a Chevy Suburban around 3 a.m. Friday. The vehicle is believed to be a model year 2000 that is dark grey with tinted windows and black wheels.

The group was caught on surveillance video, but the company says the suspects were wearing hats, hoodies and bandanas. Sixteen aluminum bud and pilot wheels used on semi-trucks were stolen.

The general manager, Sam Smith, hopes the thieves get caught, but he says the real solution to his problem needs to come from lawmakers.

"The need for legislation to eliminate the marketplace for thieves to take metal and instantly convert it to cash,” he said.

The company stated in an email, “We have reported other metal thefts but if the scrap companies didn't buy the stolen goods, no one would be stealing.”

Ralph Smith Company is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction, and they said the recent thefts have totaled up to more than $50,000 in losses for local business owners.

Anyone with information about the alleged thefts is asked to call West Bountiful police.

CENTERVILLE, Utah -- Two people have been arrested in connection with at least 20 home and car burglaries that have occurred in Centerville over the past two weeks.

The men were spotted hiding in a car early Saturday morning on Island View Drive. One of them was armed with a gun. That suspect is 21-year-old Richard Martinez. The other suspect's name is not being released because he is a minor.

According to police, a resident was on his deck around 3 a.m. when he saw the suspects walking around the neighborhood acting suspicious and going into people's yards.

The burglars were actually caught on a night vision security camera. It appears one of them was wearing a mask over his face.

The neighbor called the police. When officers arrived, they began searching the neighborhood. They discovered the two men hiding in the back seat of a car. The suspects were arrested without incident, though Martinez did have a gun in his waistband.

They also had stolen items with them from four different burglaries that took place the night before.

"I noticed that my car has been broken into at least three different times and my shed doors have been left open, so it's been a nightly thing, almost every other night someone is coming through around two or three in the morning and grabbing whatever they can grab," said victim Michael Whitley. "I think it's great that they were able to find them and at least return some of the stuff, and it's also nice to know that hopefully this will stop. We won't have to worry about stuff so much."

According to police, these suspects typically accessed cars and homes through unlocked doors in the middle of the night.

The suspect is said to have walked off with more than $75,000 in cash. He’s said to be driving a newer model black Chevrolet Malibu.

Federal authorities are reportedly involved in the case because of the massive size of the theft. The investigation is ongoing.

SALT LAKE CITY — Police in Salt Lake City are requesting the public’s help locating two suspects wanted in connection with the theft of two handguns from a pawnshop, and the pair is also wanted in several other states and should be considered armed and dangerous.

According to a press release from the Salt Lake City Police Department, the suspects are 31-year-old Daniel Lyman-Muzzy and 35-year-old Regina Collins.

The pair allegedly entered a downtown pawn shop on June 25, and while Collins distracted an employee the male suspect stole two semi-automatic handguns from a display case. The press release states both are wanted by the U.S. Marshall’s Service for robberies and burglaries in several other states.

Police state the suspects are armed and dangerous and citizens who see them should not approach but should instead call 911. Anyone with information about the crime or the suspects is asked to contact police at 801-799-3000.

Draper PD urges residents to take action in face of spike in burglaries

DRAPER, Utah – The Draper Police Department has started a victim prevention program after seeing a rise in home and car burglaries in the city.

They said residents are more vulnerable to theft because many think they live in a safe community and leave their homes open during the daytime.

“I think we just don’t realize we’re a target,” said Draper resident Wendy Clark.

“I think we feel like we’re sort of immune to break-ins, and so I think we get a little slipshod about taking care of our property,” said Draper resident Gary Klumker.

The Draper Police Department reports there have been 109 residential burglaries and 239 vehicle burglaries in Draper in the past year.

“Seventy-six percent of the residential burglaries, the suspect did not use any force to enter the residence or garage,” said Draper Police Chief Bryan Roberts. “The same is true in 60 percent of the vehicle burglaries.”

Roberts said burglaries can be prevented if people take the appropriate measures to secure their homes.

“We are asking for Draper residents to inoculate themselves from ‘victimitis,’” he said. “Common symptoms include, One: good trusting citizens and a, quote: ‘that happens to other people not me,’ syndrome.”

Klumker said he has noticed thieves targeting their neighborhood because of the wealthier residents and the relaxed attitudes.

“The mindset is that most of the crime occurs west of us and not here, not on the east side” he said.

Draper police are offering tips for how residents can better protect themselves.

"One, always close and lock your garage doors; two, always lock your car doors; and three, remove your valuables from your car,” Roberts said.

Debi D’Amico, a Crime Specialist with Draper City, said the most common times for burglaries are in the summertime and during the holidays.

“That’s when people are getting valuables either delivered to their home and they’re being left on the porch, or they’re leaving valuables in their car and people are breaking in or simply opening the doors if their cars aren’t locked and snatching those items,” she said.

The Draper Police Department is handing out brochures the next few months to warn residents about the spike in burglaries and to give them tips on how they can better protect their homes.

D’Amico mentioned a sure way for residents to protect their property is owning a dog. She said they interviewed burglars who say when a dog barks, thieves are easily scared off.

She also mentioned sleeping with your car alarm remote nearby, so you can easily activate it if you hear someone breaking into your home. She also said people can join a Neighborhood Watch Group to keep an eye on each other’s homes and be more aware of what’s going on in their communities.

Shop releases video of alleged shoplifters, seeks public’s help identifying 5 women

SALT LAKE CITY -- It's not the group you expect to rip you off.

"It looked like a grandmother, a mother, daughters and niece--so it wasn't someone you would point out to be suspicious," say Morgan Mickles, who is the sales associate who was helping the group of five women.

The alleged theft occurred at Bauer’s Fashion Eyewear, located at 51 South Main Street in City Creek Center in Salt Lake City, around 6 p.m. Thursday.

Mickles said the women were polite, saying "please" and "thank you". When they asked to see a pair of sunglasses behind a locked glass door, she thought nothing of opening the door and walking away to help other customers.

Surveillance video captures the group crowding around the sunglasses case. One woman, wearing a red tank top, seems to step back and keep an eye out for the store employee.

"I believe the older woman probably was the overseer of the operation: She kind of watched and kept tabs," Mickles said.

Satisfied that they are in the clear, the group of women walk out of the store with six pairs of sunglasses ranging from $150 to $200 each. The total haul was $1,030 worth of products.

"You want to trust people, naturally, you do," Mickles said. "You want to believe that people are just doing the right thing, they're not bad people and they're not here to steal from you."

She also said it's a lesson learned the hard way. The next time she, or any other employee, walks away from a sunglasses case it will be locked.

Salt Lake City police are investigating the case, and anyone with information about the women or the alleged theft is asked to contact authorities.

Store employees said regardless of whether or not it helps the case, they wanted to get the surveillance video in the public eye. They don't believe this is the first time the group of women have pulled off such a crime, and it may not be the last. They said they hope the video will serve as a warning to others to keep an eye out.

KEARNS, Utah – The owner of a car that was stolen used a smartphone to track the vehicle from West Jordan to Kearns, and when police responded they found that car as well as a second stolen vehicle apparently stripped for its parts.

Lt. Bill Robertson of the Unified Police Department said they received a report from West Jordan police around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday that a stolen vehicle may be at an address in the Kearns area.

“The owner of that vehicle had actually made his way to this area off of a ping on his phone,” Robertson said. “And so officers arrived in the area and were able to locate his stolen vehicle.”

Those officers responded to a home in the area of 5000 South and 5100 West, where they conducted a search.

“During that search, officers were able to identify another stolen vehicle that had been pieced out in the backyard,” Robertson said. “A lot of times engines and things are taken out of vehicles and put into other vehicles and things like that, so officers did a great job identifying that second stolen vehicle.”

So far no one has been taken into custody, but the vehicle initially reported stolen out of West Jordan was recovered intact.

Robertson said it’s a bit unusual to find two stolen cars in the same location when one of them is in pieces, and he said that raises the possibility the case is connected to a larger criminal operation.

“This could be a part of a stolen vehicle ring, we don’t know that,” he said. “The investigation is in its early stages and investigators will follow-up.”

MILLCREEK, Utah – Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a total of four suspects in two unrelated theft attempts at ATMs in the Millcreek area, and authorities have released surveillance images from the alleged crimes.

According to information from the Unified Police Department released Thursday, the most recent incident occurred Monday around 4 a.m. at Mountain America Credit Union, 2174 East 3300 South. The other was June 27 around 1:27 a.m. at America First Credit Union, 4519 South 1300 East.

On August 10, witnesses saw there was heavy damage to the ATM and called police to report it. Surveillance images show two suspects in a silver car attempted to break into the ATM. Both suspects had their faces covered, but photos of them and their vehicle are available above.

The first suspect is described as a Caucasian female who was wearing heavy black eye makeup, sunglasses, a dark cap, and a gray hooded sweatshirt. She had a blue bandanna covering her face.

The second suspect is a Caucasian or Hispanic male who was wearing a ball cap and a black hooded sweatshirt. He had a white face mask on.

The pair was driving a mid-2000s model-year Suzuki Forenza or a compact car of a similar appearance.

On June 27, two witnesses reported to police they saw the occupants of a white Chevy Tahoe attempting to break into the ATM at America First Credit Union. The suspects fled immediately when they realized the witnesses were present, police stated. The suspects appeared to have tried to use a drill to get into the ATM, and when that failed they backed their vehicle into the ATM, leaving behind a piece of the broken cover for the tail light. The suspects and their visibly damaged vehicles are pictured in the gallery above.

One suspect is described as a Caucasian male with a trimmed, thin beard and tattoos on both biceps. He was wearing a dark cap and a maroon, short sleeved T-shirt. The man appears to be bald.

The second suspect is a Hispanic female with long, brown hair who was wearing a black tank top, a black sweater and light-colored shorts.

The pair were driving a newer, white Chevrolet Tahoe 4-door SUV with a trailer hitch on the rear. The cover of one tail light was damaged.

Police stated they don’t believe the thefts are related or linked in any way other than by the similar nature of the crimes, and neither theft attempt was successful. Police have not yet been able to identify the suspects, and they ask anyone who recognizes them to call UPD at 801-743-7000.

Man who supervised adults with disabilities convicted of exploiting clients to buy things for himself

NORTHERN UTAH — A man has been convicted on numerous felony counts relating to exploitation of vulnerable adults after he used his position with a company offering services to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities to use client funds to purchase things for himself, including a trip to Las Vegas, tickets to a Justin Timberlake concert, and nearly $400 worth of shoes.

According to a press release from the Utah Attorney General’s Office, Jordan Jeffery Jack of Clearfield has been convicted on the following counts: seven counts of exploitation of a vulnerable adult as third degree felonies, one count of communications fraud as a second-degree felony, and one count of theft by deception as a class B misdemeanor.

According to court documents and the press release from the AG’s Office, Jack was an area director the Utah-based business Chrysalis, which “focuses on serving and supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live a fulfilling life in the community.”

The company contracts with different agencies to provide various essential services, which includes things like a money management system for Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, Food Stamps and Housing Assistance Programs.

The company has an internal accounting program to manage clients’ Social Security and other income, and client funds are deposited into a general bank account. Accountants for the company then pay the clients’ rent, utilities, medical costs and other bills from that general account while providing each client with a monthly statement.

An area director noticed discrepancies in the statements of several clients, and after further investigation determined Jack had allegedly purchased items for himself with client funds, reproduced fraudulent receipts and payee statements, and submitted “corrected statements” in an effort to conceal the discrepancies. The director found more than $10,000 in allegedly fraudulent transactions involving nine clients between April 2012 and January of 2014–with the majority of the thefts occurring in November and December of 2013

Lead Prosecutor and Assistant Attorney General Kay Lynn Wootton stated in the press release Jack splurged on himself at the cost of his clients.

“[Jordan Jack] stole from disabled clients so he could buy luxury items like a trip to Vegas, a Justin Timberlake concert and nearly $400 in tennis shoes,” she stated. “He was no ‘Jean Valjean.’”

State officials pointed out the clients Jordan stole from were very vulnerable.

“Because of their disability none of the victims were able to testify in court. They were completely unaware that a caretaker, entrusted with their money, was stealing from them,” stated Robert Steed, Director of the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, in the press release from the Attorney General’s Office.

Authorities stated documents and evidence indicate Jordan stole from more than 14 residents of the group homes he supervised. The man is scheduled to be sentenced October 7.

Reward offered in case after rare albino iguanas stolen in Tooele

TOOELE, Utah – Two rare iguanas were stolen from their cages at Rockstar Pets on 215 North Main Street in Tooele, and police say it happened between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

Jen Walters is the manager of Rockstar and describes what she saw when she got to work that morning.

“One of the locks was on the floor, and the other one was just hanging,” she said.

The female iguana has the albino gene, and the male iguana is a bright yellow, Crutchfield albino. The store’s owner bought them two years ago from Florida.

“He's the only one in Utah that color, that Crutchfield gene, and probably the only one within the states surrounding Utah,” Walters said.

The male is worth about $2,000 and the female, $400.

Their babies are worth an estimated $3,000.

There are hundreds of various animals at Rockstar Pets, but police said the thieves specifically targeted the iguanas.

“We obviously want to make sure that we treat it for the case that it is, which is burglary and theft, and get as much information as we can so we can do justice for the victim,” said Officer Tanya Turnbow with the Tooele City Police Department.

There are surveillance cameras mounted throughout the store, but they were turned off.

“We weren't able to pull anything off of them,” Walters said.

So with nothing from cameras, perhaps the store’s mascot, Roadblock, may have seen the thieves in action.

The desert tortoise patrols the store morning and night.

“We're actually thinking about putting a GoPro on Roadblock. He saw everything,” joked Walters.

The store is offering a $500 reward for any information that can help in the case. If you have any tips, call Tooele City Police at 435 882 5600.

(CNN) — Just hours after Julie Mott’s family mourned their loss at her funeral, grief struck once again when the young woman’s body disappeared.

“It is believed that in the hours after the funeral service, someone came into the funeral home and stole her remains,” San Antonio police said.

The 25-year-old Texan died after a long bout with cystic fibrosis. Her funeral was August 15 at the Mission Park Funeral Chapels North.

“There wasn’t any forced entry to the facility,” Sgt. Javier Salazar told CNN affiliate KSAT. “So what it’s believed is between the hours of 1:30 p.m., when the service ended, to about 4:30 p.m., when they locked up for the evening, someone came in and stole Ms. Mott’s remains. That person remains at large.”

Funeral home owner Dick Tips told the affiliate that he believes the body may have been stolen by someone who didn’t support Mott’s cremation, which was supposed to take place August 17.

Mott’s father implored the community for help.

“We just want our daughter’s remains returned so we can have some closure to our grief,” Tim Mott told the affiliate.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call San Antonio police at 210-225-TIPS (8477).

The funeral home is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the remains.

HOLLADAY, Utah -- Unified police, along with several other agencies, are searching for a man who escaped from police after a chase Wednesday morning, and officers stated the armed and dangerous suspect is among the Metro Gang Unit's "Top 10" most wanted fugitives.

The Metro Gang Unit spotted 24-year-old Stephen C. Hammer near 5600 South 1300 East around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, and police followed him until he noticed the officer behind him, then he took off.

Police said Hammer drove all the way to 3900 South, where he turned around and ended up at the Turnberry Apartment Complex near 4500 South.

Officers spiked the suspect’s tires, and Hammer ran away on foot into the neighborhood just east of the apartments.

Police said an unknown woman was also in the car, and she ran away as well once the chase reached the apartment complex.

Officers set up containment and searched with the help of K9 units from UPD and Salt Lake City PD, but they were unable to find him.

“He used a gun in the robbery, and so we still consider him armed and dangerous,” Lt. Manfred Lassig of the Unified Police Department said.

A press release states Hammer is listed as one of the Metro Gang Unit’s Top 10 fugitives and is on UPD’s Most Wanted list as well. The man is the suspect in multiple burglaries, thefts, firearm thefts and other crimes.

Anyone who sees Hammer or who has knowledge of his whereabouts is asked to call police at 801-743-7000.

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah – Two women are in custody after they allegedly stole a vehicle, used the victim’s credit card fraudulently and then tried to evade police after being spotted spray painting the SUV at Little Dell Reservoir—and officers are still seeking a male suspect and another stolen vehicle in connection with the case.

According to a press release from the Unified Police Department, things began with a report of stolen vehicle at Neff’s Canyon Thursday.

The vehicle was a white SUV, either a Chevy Tahoe or Yukon, with a broken out rear side window. The vehicle and suspects were spotted later in the day using the victim’s credit card at a Smith’s in Millcreek.

Later Thursday, a UPD officer on canyon patrol received a call from the Salt Lake Watershed, where an employee reported seeing an SUV with a broken out window being spray-painted black at Little Dell Reservoir.

Police in unmarked vehicles began following the suspects as they went up Pine Crest Canyon, and police observed the suspects breaking into mail boxes and stealing the contents. Police moved into position, boxed-in the suspect vehicle, and had other officers in position to warn bystanders–then they spiked the vehicle’s tires.

The SUV lost all four tires and crashed into a creek embankment at 5730 East Emigration Canyon. The two female suspects inside fled on foot but were quickly taken into custody.

The women are identified as 27-year-old Emilee J. Evans (Leyba) and 29-year-old Anna C. Roberts.

Police searched the stolen SUV and located, “a great deal of stolen property including: a duffel bag full of mail from at least 20 different people, stolen ID’s, Passports, Vehicle Titles, and Bank Records,” according to the press release.

Police also learned there was a male suspect with the women when they entered the canyon, and he had allegedly stolen a red Subaru Forester and driven it out of the canyon. The Subaru is a 2003 model and has Utah license plate #065MEA.

Anyone who was a victim in the thefts or who witnessed any of the alleged criminal activity is asked to call police at 801-743-7000. Anyone who sees the stolen vehicle is also asked to contact authorities.

Police: Robbery suspects pistol-whipped man, bound him to his wheelchair

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah – Police are seeking multiple suspects after a disabled veteran was pistol-whipped, bound to his wheelchair and then robbed inside a South Salt Lake apartment.

“I really thought they would kill me at different times," said Dwight Hahn, the victim in the robbery. "They threatened it, must have been 25-30 times."

The 66-year-old man was sitting in his living room last Monday when he said two armed men walked in through his front door, which was left open. Surveillance video caught the men entering just after 1:00 a.m.

Immediately, they both pulled out handguns and started to make demands.

“[They said] 'Get on the floor. Get on the floor.' And I said, ‘I can’t,'” explained Hahn.

Hahn is confined to his chair due to a leg amputation a few years ago. The two men wheeled him into his bedroom and taped his hands together. They then spent the next hour, according to Hahn, clearing out a safe in the home and stealing his electronics.

“Took my medication, two TVs, my computer, my printer,” he said. “A disabled veteran and they took advantage of me that way. I hope they get caught and go to prison forever.”

The men loaded the items into Hahn’s Ford Explorer and then left. But, as they fled, they accidentally knocked the car’s wheelchair ramp off in the middle of the street.

“I hear a loud crash, boom sounding,” explained neighbor Gary Lockhart.

Lockhart and other residents noticed someone speeding off in Hahn’s car, so they decided to check on him at the apartment.

“I went in the back and he was sitting there with his arms, hands crossed and there was tape like over his eyes,” Lockhart said.

South Salt Lake Police recovered the car a week later in West Valley City. But their biggest lead came hours after the attack. Surveillance video from convenience stores around the valley caught three women using Hahn’s credit cards. According to police, they were traveling in a Toyota Paseo, possibly green, with no visible license plates.

“Who does that to a disabled 66, he’s almost 67 years old, person in a wheelchair? It’s truly shocking,” said South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller.

Anyone who recognizes any of the suspects or who has knowledge of the crimes is asked to call South Salt Lake PD at 801-840-4000. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
