More than 20 guns stolen in Bountiful burglary; $5,000 reward offered in case

BOUNTIFUL, Utah – Federal and local authorities are offering a $5,000 reward in the case after security cameras captured a burglary in Bountiful where the thieves took more than two dozen handguns.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Bountiful Police Department are offering the reward in connection with a burglary that occurred around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pawn Depot, 613 South 500 West.

"I got a phone call at 3:30 in the morning, very unsettling, let me know someone had broken into our business, and how quickly I could get there," said Cameron Winquist, one of the owners of Pawn Depot.

Surveillance footage shows two suspects wearing hoodies enter the store, and the person in the lead appears to make a shushing gesture to the other suspect as they pass through the front of the store. One suspect appears to be carrying a metal object, perhaps a crowbar. Within about a minute, the suspects exit again with the stolen weapons in bags.

Police say, based on the speed of the crime, they believe the suspects had scouted out the store ahead of time.

"The two men had obviously cased the area," said Lt. Dave Edwards with Bountiful PD. "They came in, broke through the glass window in front and went directly to where the weapons were stored."

Ken Croke, ATF Denver Field Division Special Agent in Charge, stated in a press release they need the public’s help to identify the suspects.

“Recovering these stolen firearms is a top investigative priority for ATF,” Croke stated. “We are appealing to the public to provide any information they have about this burglary. Our goal is to quickly apprehend those responsible and recover the stolen firearms before they end up in future crimes.”

Edwards echoed that plea for assistance.

"Any time we have this number of weapons, or any weapons, in the hands of criminals it's a real danger to our community," Edwards said. "We just don't want to see anyone get hurt. If we can recover these weapons quickly, we know our community is safer and the public at-large along the Wasatch Front is safer."

According to the press release, stealing firearms from a federally licensed dealer and possessing stolen firearms are both federal crimes punishable by up to 10 years in prison. The stolen guns are worth more $10,000 all together.

"It's definitely a big hit to the pocketbook, and we just try to run a business just like anyone else would want to," Winquist said. "It's the American dream, and when stuff like this happens it sets you back, when someone just violates what you've worked so hard for."

Anyone with information about the crime or the suspects should contact the ATF at 1-800-ATF-GUNS or Bountiful PD at 801-298-6000. Tips can also be submitted online through the ATF’s new “reportit” app, which is available here.  The press release states the $5,000 reward is for information that leads to an arrest and conviction for the suspects responsible.

SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man has pleaded guilty to felony charges in connection with a scheme where he and another man defrauded investors by posing as representatives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Alan McKee pleaded guilty to charges of fraud and unlawful activity, and both felony counts could net as much as 15 years in prison.

McKee and Gary Anderson allegedly defrauded a construction company and two individuals out of about $1.2 million between July 2013 and October of 2015, according to the Utah Attorney General’s Office.

Mckee allegedly sent letters to the construction company that purportedly came from the LDS Church in connection with construction on a site in Elberta. Anderson is accused of making at least one phone call where he posed as a LDS Church official while speaking with an employee of the construction company.

The pair allegedly induced two other victims to invest in a scheme to purchase excess farm equipment.

McKee is sentenced to be scheduled in Third District Court on November 28.

Anderson appears in court next on October 28 for a scheduling conference regarding his pending trial.

SALT LAKE CITY — Have you seen this man with the green-haired tattoo? Police would like to know his identity.

He’s one of the people recently profiled in Fox 13’s new ‘Wanted with Scott McKane’ segment, which airs Saturday nights on Fox 13 News at Nine.

McKane features the faces of men and women who’ve been caught on camera under suspicious circumstances.

Salt Lake City Police describe this man as a serial burglar.

He’s been caught on camera several times in recent months, sneaking into the Stansbury Condominiums near the corner of 200 South and 700 East. It’s a secured building, but he gains access by walking up behind actual residents on their way in and following them inside.

Once in, he wanders the hallways, laundry areas and the parking garage, collecting clothing from dryers and taking other items.

Police are hoping viewers and social media users might recognize him. His style seems to change, but the suspect has consistently worn a silver bracelet which fits loosely on his right wrist, and he has a rather distinctive tattoo of a skull or face on his left forearm with bright green hair.

On at least one occasion he was also wearing purple Nike brand running shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to call Salt Lake City Police at 801-799-3093.

A new group of suspects will also be featured on Saturday night’s installment of ‘Wanted’ on Fox 13 News at Nine.

Family pleads for help finding suspect after father murdered at SLC car wash

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah -- A Salt Lake City family needs the public’s help to find answers after police said a man was randomly shot and killed while washing his car last week.

The suspect stole the man’s vehicle after the Friday night shooting, Salt Lake City Police said, and later set it on fire and dumped it.

Now, Cristhian Gutierrez’s wife is left wondering why her husband is gone, and who is responsible. A shrine sat on the fireplace mantle at Gabriela Gutierrez’s home Wednesday evening.

“He was an amazing husband, he was my best friend,” a tearful and emotional Gabriela said.

A picture of him stood next to a burning candle, as a tribute to her now late husband.

“I couldn't even say goodbye to him, I couldn't… I couldn’t see him,” she said, crying.

Gabriela and Cristhian’s family are mourning together after he died in the hospital Saturday morning.

Cristhian, having just bought a new car, headed to the VIP car wash to clean it, Gabriela said, when he was shot and carjacked.

Police said Cristhian stumbled over to the busy Redwood Road, collapsed, and got help from passersby.

“It's sad, the way that he was taken from us,” Gabriela said. “He didn't deserve to be taken that way at all.”

Gutierrez, 33, was a father to a 9-year old daughter.

His family is now trying to understand this senseless crime.

“For one dollar, for 20 dollars, for a car: Is that the price of a life?” Cristhian’s brother, Jose Gutierrez-Marquez asked. “It's not fair, it's not.”

The pain is too much to bear, but they have no choice.

His several brothers gathered at Gabriela’s house Wednesday evening, solemn and emotional. Family is traveling up from Mexico to pay their respects.

His family said Cristhian was a hard-working person who spent lots of time with those he loved.

“Everyone [who] had the chance to know him, knew what a kind of a wonderful person he was,” Jose said.

Cristhian and Gabriela had a lifetime to look forward to. They were only married for 3.5 years.

Gabriela said they planned to renew their vows on their February 15 wedding anniversary, the day after Valentine’s Day.

They dreamt of buying a home, she said, and someday building a house in Mexico.

Now, instead, she’s dealing with the reality of what happened and knowing the person who did this is still out there on the streets.

“This is the worst pain that anyone could ever feel,” Gabriela said. “I just hope that someone does come forward and we’re able to find the man that did this to my husband, and took him away from me and our family.”

Salt Lake City Police said they don’t have leads on a suspect, but hope surveillance footage will help shed some light on the shooting.

Anyone who may have information about Friday’s shooting should call Salt Lake City Police at 801-799-3000. Tips can remain anonymous.

South Jordan woman pleads for help after man buys jewelry with counterfeit bills

SOUTH JORDAN – South Jordan Police are looking for a man who purchased jewelry from a woman using counterfeit bills. Thanks to a surveillance camera, they got a good look at the suspect.

Jill Smith’s door bell is connected to her home surveillance camera. The device came in handy October 15 as she waited for a customer to purchase a ring she was selling online.

“He called me and said, 'Hey, I saw this ring. I'm interested. I want to come take a look at it,'" Jill Smith said.

She texted him her address, and within the hour he was at Jill’s front door.

Once inside, he handed her $400 in cash – or so she thought.

“As soon as I pulled it out, I could feel that it wasn't quite right,” Smith said. “It didn't have the watermark. It didn't have the security strip.”

Police confirmed the eight $50 bills were in fact fake. But before Smith had realized it, the guy was already gone.

Surveillance video shows him running off to his car parked down the street.

“I've done this for years and nobody has ever even shorted me,” Smith said.

South Jordan Police are checking pawn shops and jewelry stores for the stolen ring. In the meantime, they’re hoping the public can identify the suspect. He’s described as a white male with glasses, who stands about 6-feet 3-inches tall and weighs around 300 pounds. Jill says he had tattoos on his arms and calves.

Police urge people to be careful when buying or selling something online.

“Make sure your method of payment, especially if you're gonna take cash, that you know what you're looking for, or at least check it prior to just giving your property up,” said Lt. Matt Pennington of the South Jordan Police Department.

Since the incident, Jill continues to sell jewelry online and meets with customers in her home. But she’s taking some precautions. A security camera now sits in her living room.

“I never thought I needed to be, but apparently they're out there," Smith said. "People that are going to take advantage of you will do it.”

If you recognize the suspect, or have any info that could help South Jordan City Police, give them a call at (801) 840 4000.

Orem police say ‘Felony Lane Gang’ using car burglaries as step toward identity theft, fraud

$

OREM, Utah -- Orem Police are investigating a rash of car burglaries. They say 90 vehicles have been broken into in the past 40 days, and it's all part of a national crime ring.

"It took them I'm sure seconds to break the window, and it was just shattered, and to grab the things in my front seat and go," said victim Susan Howard.

Howard's license plate says "hapy suz", but she's been anything but happy since her car was broken into and her purse stolen at an Orem Wal-Mart parking lot last month.

"I just noticed there was like glass, and I just picked it up and I was like wow, I looked all around and it just shocked me, it just scared me, it was terrible," Howard said.

Almost all of the crimes have occurred in large public parking lots.

"It can happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone," Howard said.

Police say this crime ring, based out of Florida, is going state to state, specifically looking for credit cards, IDs and checks. Then they enlist the help of locals to steal the victim's money, and, in some cases, their identity.

"Recruits transients, drug addicts, you know, near some of the homeless shelters and offers them a little bit of money to cash some stolen checks," said Lt. Craig Martinez with the Orem Police Department.

This criminal enterprise has been given the nickname, "The Felony Lane Gang."

"They say to use the second or third or fourth lane away from the teller window so it's harder to see you," Martinez said of their tactics. "You are a little ways away, so that's basically considered the felony lane."

That's how one of these suspects was caught, attempting to cash stolen checks at an American First Credit Union. The teller saw a fraud alert was issued and called police. Seth Martin was arrested a short time later.

"This is just one of the runners," Martinez said. "He's a local guy, but he was driving a rental car from Florida, so that shows you how dedicated they are, they are driving rental cars across the country."

Police said gyms, like Vasa Fitness, have been hit the hardest because people often leave their valuables in the car.

"I just got off work and I was walking out here and there was two cars right next to each other, both had the passenger side window busted out," said Madison Hunter of Vasa Fitness. "It was like 3 p.m. in the afternoon, I was like, 'oh my gosh! Who does that?'"

Jason Elder says he'll be keeping all of his belongings within an arms reach from now on.

"Bring a back pack, keep my stuff in my bag, my phone, my wallet, my keys, and just keep it with me the whole time I'm in the gym," he said.

UTAH COUNTY — Police found a man passed out in the driver’s seat of a vehicle trespassing at a trail head Friday morning, and the resulting investigation led to the recovery of stolen property from eight different victims.

Early in the morning on Friday, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office Recreation Team encountered a vehicle trespassing after hours at the Rock Canyon Trailhead, and they approached to find a man passed out in the driver’s seat.

According to Sunday’s press release, police checked records on the driver, identified as 32-year-old Dallas Leon Draper, and they learned the man had several active warrants out for his arrest. During a search, police located a “large piece of heroin” on Draper’s person and a search of the vehicle turned up marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Inside the vehicle police found two driver’s licenses, a vehicle title, and a passport all belonging to persons other than Draper. Police ultimately determined the documents were stolen. Police also found several forged or stolen checks along with various items like backpacks, suitcases and wallets. All told, police said Draper had property that was stolen from eight different victims from all over Utah and Salt Lake counties.

The vehicle Draper was inside was also determined to have been stolen from a Provo FrontRunner station several weeks ago.

Draper was booked on numerous charges relating to drug possession and theft, along with felony charges for possessing identifying documents belonging to other people.

TAYLORSVILLE – Tis’ the season for thieves to start snatching packages off porches. That’s what happened to Trisha Montano at her Taylorsville home in broad daylight.

“Yesterday, my step-son got home from school, he was looking forward to getting his new scooter that he just ordered," Montano said.

Montano checked her surveillance camera app on her phone to see if the package arrived.

“I can see that the FedEx guy dropped the package off at 11," she said.

She also discovered another video clip from around noon. That’s when cameras captured a crime in progress. You can see a car pull up to her home, and a man drops a woman off. She walks toward the front porch, grabs the package and takes off.

Inside was a $200 scooter. Montano's 15-year-old step-son saved up money for it for months by doing chores around the house.

Thankfully, it can be replaced, but Montano says she feels violated.

“Having somebody, a thief, going around and looking on your porch: it's scary," she said.

Montano installed the cameras a month ago. She hopes the video will catch someone’s attention.

Unified Police Department personnel are looking for a gold, 4-door Honda. The suspect is a white female in her 50s. She has salt and pepper colored hair, weighs 170 pounds, and was wearing a black shirt and blue jeans.

With the holiday season fast approaching, police are reminding people to take precautions when having packages delivered to their home.

“Let people know you're expecting a package, especially if it's very valuable, so they can watch out for each other,” said Detective Ken Hansen with the Unified Police Department.

He added:" “Also, if anyone happens to stop in front of your house or by the house or walks up to the house, jot down the license plate number.”

If you recognize the woman in this video, Call Unified Police at 801-743-7000.

Trailer full of donations for homeless veterans stolen from Layton neighborhood

LAYTON, Utah — A Layton woman is heartbroken after the trailer carrying donated items she collected for the homeless was stolen.

Jen Kirchhoefer’s brand new trailer is easy to spot. It’s wrapped with her picture, a Real Estate business logo, and, on the back, a photo of a horse.

“It’s not discreet,” as Kirchhoefer put it.

The trailer is carrying precious cargo.

“We’ve been collecting canned food items and boxed food items and hats, coats, gloves, boots, scarves,” Kirchhoefer said.

For the past six weeks, she’s collected thousands of donations from the community, all to help homeless veterans in Ogden.

“It feeds them for almost the whole year," she said of the annual project. "Last year, we got close to 100,000 food items, so it’s going to hurt them."

What hurts even more, North Layton Junior High helped with the donation drive as part of a contest to raise money for the school. With the trailer gone, they lose out.

“That for me is the bigger heartbreak then the trailer, a trailer can be replaced,”  Kirchhoefer said.

Jen did receive some good news this morning.

“Police called me early this morning and said we may have found some of your stuff,”  Kirchhoefer said.

The suspects crashed into Jay Frye’s garage and ditched the truck.

“I open the window and asked the cop what was going on, and he said 'Stay in the house, stay in the house. 'There’s a couple of suspects on the loose here.',” Frye said.

Layton City Police arrested 18 year-old Francisco Orozco Gutierrez. He’s facing felony theft charges.

Inside the vehicle were tons of stolen items, including a box from inside Jen’s trailer. Police tracked down a second suspect at a Layton home. Two stolen trailers were found, but neither of them belonged to Jen.

In the meantime, Jen has until November 7th to drop off the donations to the Salvation Army in Ogden. She’ll do her best to collect as much as she can, even without a trailer.

“They’re not going to stop us,"  Kirchhoefer said.

If you would like to help Jen reach her goal and donate some items, call 801-645-2134.

Police: Teens crash 3 stolen muscle cars almost immediately after leaving dealership

ST. PETERS, Mo. – Four brand new, super-fast, and expensive cars were ripped off from a St. Peters, Missouri, dealership early Friday morning.

The suspects then crashed three of them, almost immediately, according to KTVI.

The incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. at the Napleton Mid Rivers Dodge dealership. The teenage suspects did not get far down the road before they crashed. The suspects, said to be from the Kansas City area, did not know the roads, police believe, and the powerful engines proved to be too much for the young drivers, ages 16, 17, and 19.

“They lost control of them fairly easily. They made it less than a mile,” St. Peters Police Officer Melissa Doss said.

Police caught all three after a short foot chase.

Deandre Chiney (left) and Jordon Neely.

Deandre Chiney, 17, and Jordon Neely, 19, are in jail facing a number of charges, including burglary and receiving stolen property. Police said the 16-year-old will be charged in juvenile court. Three of the four stolen vehicles were also recovered; two of them are believed to be totaled.

Among the vehicles stolen were two Dodge Challenger Hellcats. They’re among the fastest road vehicles, with a horsepower topping 700 RPMs. Frank Schaffer, general manager of the dealership, said he’ll have a tough time ordering replacements.

“It’s going to take several months to replace before Chrysler will give me allocation to replace them, so this one left is kind of special,” he said.

A dealership employee happened to be driving by, saw car lights in the lot, and called police. Meanwhile, Schaffer said he has some questions for the suspects.

“What were you thinking? You’re going to get caught. You just want to ruin your life before you have a chance to get it started?” he said.

Police are trying to determine why they came all the way from Kansas City to commit the alleged thefts. Doss said it’s not out of the ordinary for criminals to come from other towns to break the law in St. Peters.

CLEARFIELD, Utah — Police responding to a report of a stolen trailer Thursday morning made two arrests and ultimately located a suspected chop shop with several stolen vehicles inside.

Sgt. Kyle Schroeder of the Layton Police Department said officers responded just after midnight Thursday to a report of a trailer theft in Layton, but by the time they arrived the suspects were gone.

Police patrolling the area later in the day spotted the suspected vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The suspects pulled into a driveway before fleeing on foot. The driver did not shift the vehicle into park upon exiting, and the car did minor damage to a home.

chop-shop-arrestsPolice searched the area using K9 units and arrested 18-year-old Francsico Orozco-Gutierrez and 21-year-old Jose Flores. Police went to Flores’ home, where they found a stolen trailer as well as evidence relating to two other trailer thefts. One of the stolen trailers was filled with donations a woman had collected on behalf of homeless veterans.

Investigators had suspected there was a chop shop somewhere in Clearfield, and this week’s investigation led them to the location on State Street. Detectives found multiple stolen vehicles along with car parts and a trailer at the location.

Stolen vehicles recovered, suspects arrested after police operation in Salt Lake County

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah -- Police from two agencies teamed up this weekend for an all-out blitz aimed at recovering stolen vehicles.

This kind of joint operation from Unified Police Department and West Valley City PD is something officers carry out a few times a year.

Assisted by a helicopter, police were out searching for stolen vehicles when they came upon someone on a motorcycle.

“At one point they attempted a traffic stop, the motorcycle fled from the officers at that point; we don't pursue on stolen vehicles,” said Lt. Bill Robertson of the Unified Police Department.

But while they didn’t pursue the motorcycle in ground vehicles, the helicopter kept watch above and notified officers when the suspect finally came to a stop.

“Then officers were able to come into the area and set up a containment, and we were successful in taking him into custody,” Robertson said.

A number of motorcycles were recovered early Saturday morning, with police making arrests on a number of riders who had already violated probation. Police also captured a suspect who fled at high speeds in a vehicle stolen in a carjacking.

“Spotted a vehicle that was making some maneuvers that concerned him, so he ran a plate and it came back as a stolen vehicle from a carjacking that occurred in Magna,” Robertson said of a white Audi spotted traveling at high speeds.

The suspect behind the wheel of that car was arrested and is now facing felony charges.

Police departments don't do these operations often, but when they do they said they find they’re recovering stolen vehicles and catching wanted criminals in the process.

“That’s why these operations pay off, they’re very proactive,” Robertson said.

Police said, due to safety concerns, they don’t generally pursue stolen vehicles when speeds exceed the speed limit, which is why having a helicopter present during these operations is so helpful.

Taylorsville man who uses electronic wheelchair pleads with thieves to return it

TAYLORSVILLE – A Taylorsville man is at a loss after someone stole his electronic wheelchair and independence.

Joseph Olson and his family just returned from out of town Sunday evening, so he charged his electronic wheelchair in his carport. But when he woke up the next morning, it was gone.

“I'm really at a loss at why someone would take it," he said.

Olson feels helpless. The 8th grade history teacher must now use a back-up electronic wheelchair.

“There are bungie cords on the side, duct tape on the leg rest a little bit," he said.

He’s been forced to pull it out because his new, custom-made wheelchair was stolen a few days ago.

“Our house is really tucked back into the corner," Olson said. "There's a wall, there's no way out. It's a dead end street."

Olson suffers from a rare congenital condition called Arthrogryposis multiplex congenital.

“It's where muscles never fully develop," Olson said. "I have a difficulty moving my arms and legs the way that most people do."

He relies on the device for everything.

“This chair for me is my legs," Olson said. "It's my freedom. It's my mobility. It's how I'm able to do the things that I do.”

Without it, getting around with his family is difficult.

“I take it up to the zoo, I got a little pack on my chest that I can put my daughter in, and we'll pal around the zoo,” Olson said.

He’s also unable to coach soccer.

“This is how I get out into the field," he said. "You take the chair away and I just don't have that ability.”

It will cost him $25,000 to $30,000 to replace the wheelchair. He’s filed a police report, but so far there are no leads.

More than anything, he just wants the person responsible to do the right thing and return it.

“Really in all honesty, I'm not even interested in filing charges or anything, I just need my mobility, I just need my independence back, which is really what they took,” Olson said.

Joseph’s friends have set up this GoFundMe page to assist.

If you have any information about his stolen electronic wheelchair, call Unified Police at 801-743-7000.

SALT LAKE CITY -- Don Silvino collects aluminum cans around Salt Lake City for a living. His trike is the 90-year-old man's only means of transportation, but over the weekend he watched helplessly as someone jumped onto his trike and rode off with it.

But one person's bad actions is bringing out the good in others.

He doesn't speak English, but Don Silvino's hands tell the story of a lifetime of hard work.

“Don Silvino is a little bit of a staple around downtown,” said Jorge Fierro.

The man is known for riding his trike up and down the sidewalks of Salt Lake City.

“He's been going around on a tricycle picking up aluminum cans just to make a buck,” Fierro said.

Saturday afternoon, Don was riding his rounds near Jordan Park.

“Don Sirvino was looking into a garbage can looking for some aluminum cans,” Fierro said.

While his back was turned, someone stole Don's trike. He watched as a woman took off with his only means of transportation.

“I couldn't believe someone would have the heart to do that to someone who is just trying to make a buck for a living,” Fierro said.

Don says he was upset and didn't know what he would do without his trike.

Jorge Fierro wanted to do more than wait for police to find it. He posted a picture to his Facebook page, hoping to get more people on the lookout. Share after share, Don's story touched the hearts of hundreds he had never met.

“You hear someone who is 90 years old who is trying to be self-sufficient, and for somebody to try and take away something he uses to utilize to make that happen, it hurt,” said Jorge Robles.

Robles set up a GoFundMe page with a goal to buy Don a trike and give him some money to make it through the winter.

“Within 48 hours we surpassed it, it was just incredible,” Robles said of their fundraising efforts.

More than a thousand dollars was donated, along with two trikes each worth more than $400.

Don says that he believes God will pay everybody for what they have done to help out.

The big reveal will be next week when they give Don the trikes and a check. Donations are still being accepted here.

TORRINGTON, Ct. — Police say a man stole a valuable coin collection from his father and put it through a Coinstar machine at a local supermarket in order to get money to buy crack cocaine.

Leonard Rinaldi, 53, of Torrington, was  arrested on larceny charges in connection with the theft of thousands of dollars worth of valuable coins from his father.

The coins, worth $8,000, were reported stolen on October 11th. Police say Rinaldi told them he stole the coins, took them to a CoinStar machine at a Stop and Shop and received approximately $60 for them. He then told police he used the money to buy crack cocaine. Police say he has a lengthy criminal record and was living at home with his father at the time of the theft.

Authorities have video of Rinaldi at the CoinStar machine and say that many of the coins that were not rejected by the machine because of their silver content have been recovered. Police don’t know where the  rejected coins ended up.

Rinaldi is being held on $10,000 bond and is due back in court on December 14th to enter a plea.

Police warn of rise in thefts during holiday shopping season

$

SALT LAKE CITY — It’s the time of year where law enforcement around the state want you to be on high alert. Thieves are stealing mail, packages and even items inside your car during the holiday season.

Shoppers scouting out holiday deals are not alone. It’s busy season for thieves looking for easy targets.

“We see vehicles left unlocked. It's just a quick smash and grab. You know, they come up, it takes them less than a few seconds to break your window and take whatever is sitting there and be gone,” said Lt. Matt Pennington, South Jordan Police Department.

Police recommend you not leave any shopping bags or packages in your car where people can see them. If you can, lock them in your trunk.

Another place thieves target is your mailbox.

“Last week, we had an incident in the neighborhood where somebody had broken into a locked mailbox taken a couple of residents' mail,” said Pennington.

A few years ago, South Jordan Police busted a mail theft ring. Thieves could run off with personal information from documents sent to you and could steal your identity.

Police encourage people to check their mail every day, and don’t let it sit overnight.

You’ll also want to protect the purchases delivered to your doorstep.

“I had missed my packages for a couple of days. Called, they said they were delivered,” said Trudi Madison.

A woman snatched packages off Madison’s South Ogden porch a couple of weeks ago. Her surveillance camera caught a good glimpse of the young woman, who then drove off in a red car.

“I probably won't get the merchandise back which doesn't bother me so bad as much as I want to catch the person and make sure that she's not taking Christmas packages off of porches," Madison said.

Police say make other arrangements for packages delivered to your home.

“When you're having packages delivered look at maybe an alternative place to have that delivered if you`re not going to be home. A neighbor that you trust, a workplace, if they allow that,” said Pennington.

If you have any information about the stolen package, call South Ogden Police at 801-622-2800.

SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested two people they believe may have been burglarizing vehicles throughout the Salt Lake Valley after a victim used an app to track their stolen laptop.

Tyler Angelos, 28, and Elisha Wiley, 26, were taken into custody after someone reported a vehicle burglary near Vivint Smart Home Arena Tuesday around the time of a Utah Jazz game.

Police say the victims used an app to locate a laptop stolen from the car.

“Traced his laptop back to an address in Taylorsville, officers met him at this location, and as officers were looking around at this location, they were able to find the laptop inside a vehicle in plain sight,” said Lt. Brian Lohrke of the Unified Police Department.

Police waited until the suspects returned to that parked car, and they ultimately secured search warrants for two vehicles and a home. All told that yielded between 250 and 350 stolen items including purses, credit cards, and check books. Police also located drug paraphernalia.

Burglary at convenience store latest in spree of similar crimes in Salt Lake County

DRAPER, Utah – Another recent burglary in Draper may be related to several similar crimes that have occurred around the Salt Lake Valley.

The ProStop convenience store near 11300 South Bangerter Highway was burglarized Sunday night, and the suspects smashed their way inside before emptying an ATM.

Within about a minute they get what they are after, the cash contents of the machine. And despite an alarm being tripped, they were gone before police arrived.

"They act like a well-oiled machine, if you will, the way they do the burglaries and how they go about doing their processes," said Sgt. Chad Carpenter of Draper Police Department.

There are now well over a dozen similar burglaries in the south end of Salt Lake County, and possibly even some related cases in Utah County, and police say enough is enough.

They want to catch these guys as quickly as possible.

"A lot of the similarities is they are using the pry-bars, and they're able to access into the ATM," Carpenter said. "They've actually used saws all now, to cut the security devices on the ATM, so they've actually, they're learning as they are going and they are doing a better job at getting into the machines."

While police are not certain there is a connection, it appears as though there are now two groups of pry-bar prowlers out there striking businesses. Draper PD and Cottonwood Heights PD alone have at least a dozen similar crimes under investigation.

Anyone who recognizes the individuals in the security footage or who has information about the alleged crimes is asked to contact Draper PD.
